WA-9 · Melissa Chaudhry for Congress · 2026

Proof of Work

Prepared for this moment. Not because it was planned — but because a life of fighting for housing, climate, immigrants, constitutional rights, and democratic accountability turns out to be exactly the preparation this moment requires.

I know how to fight. I know how to build. Here is the record.
01
Constitutional Accountability
When the federal government came for my family, I took them to court. And won.
  • Fought illegal detention across four federal jurisdictions — as a non-attorneyFiled and managed case infrastructure across U.S. Court of Appeals, federal district court, immigration court, and the Board of Immigration Appeals.
  • 211 pages of exhibits. 40+ filings. 124 days.Built the evidentiary record, timeline, legal arguments, and exhibits spanning 25 years of my husband's documented life in the United States.
  • Won.The federal judge in district court ordered Zahid's release and called the detention "flat out wrong." Attorney General Pam Bondi's attorney apologized in open court — directly to Zahid — for "the mistake."
  • Ninth Circuit case ongoing.A stay of removal has been in place since 2020. The appellate case continues. The fight is not over — and neither is my involvement in it.
  • Case drew national and international attention.Coverage by Rachel Maddow / MSNBC, Newsweek, Seattle Times, KUOW, KING 5, El País, Hindustan Times, and others across six continents. Institutions including the Seattle Mayor's office, CAIR-WA, Veterans for Peace, King County Democrats, and six Washington State legislators publicly supported Zahid's release.
02
Housing People Can Afford
I have worked inside housing delivery. Not just advocated for it.
  • $3.2 million in federal funding for permanently affordable eco-housingGrants strategist supporting the Congressional award to EcoThrive — a 27-unit, permanently affordable, walkable, transit-oriented eco-village in King County.
  • Community land trust operationsSupported early operations at Thurston Housing Land Trust, gaining hands-on experience in the legal, financial, and community structures that make permanently affordable homeownership possible.
  • Cooperative economics — in theory and practiceDeep expertise in democratic, worker-owned, community-rooted economic structures: how they are formed, how they are governed, how they build shared wealth rather than extracting it.
  • Anti-displacement policy and cooperative housing pathwaysWorked at the intersection of housing stability, tenant rights, and the pathways from renting to permanently affordable cooperative ownership.
03
Climate Resilience
Climate is housing. Food. Water. Transportation. Health. Survival. I have worked on all of it.
  • Built the Infrastructure Decision Makers Sustainability Support ToolA decision-support tool for public works leaders and planners weighing green vs. grey infrastructure tradeoffs — comparing lifecycle cost, implementation difficulty, pollution, carbon lock-in, and quality-of-life outcomes. Designed for the people who actually decide what gets built.
  • Regenerative agroforestry and aquaponics food systemsImplemented food systems and regenerative agriculture projects in Ghana, Indonesia, Hawaii, Nicaragua, and Honduras — with direct attention to reducing resource strain, strengthening local livelihoods, and building resilience in communities with limited safety nets.
  • Reforestation and livelihoods in Indonesia (2010)Led reforestation and community livelihoods projects combining ecological restoration with sustainable income generation.
  • Trained in permaculture, regenerative agriculture, and green buildingCertifications through ILFI (International Living Future Institute) and Starhawk's Earth Activist Training.
  • Farming and agriculture across five continentsHands-in-the-dirt experience with how food is grown, distributed, and secured — and what happens when systems break down.
04
Immigration & Belonging
I have built language access, legal records, and community trust — under real pressure.
  • 14-language civic outreach in WA-09Campaign materials, community engagement, and civic information delivered in fourteen languages across one of the most diverse congressional districts in America. Languages follow communities — not the other way around.
  • Washington Immigrant Relief Fund outreachDistributed relief funds and navigated services for undocumented families during a period of acute economic and legal vulnerability.
  • Immigration service navigation and legal intakeHelped non-English speaking individuals access immigration services, understand their legal standing, and navigate systems not built for them.
  • Federal advocacy for due processFiled and argued in federal courts on due process grounds — not abstractly, but in an active case where the outcome determined whether a human being would be deported from the country he served in uniform.
  • I ran before Zahid's detention. My commitment to immigrant justice is not a reaction to my family's experience. It predates it. The detention proved what I will do — but it did not create who I am.
05
Public Leadership & Civic Voice
90,000+ votes. A national story. A movement that keeps growing.
  • 90,000+ votes in 2024 — first run, all-volunteer, no corporate PAC moneyRan a grassroots, volunteer-powered operation against a 14-term incumbent backed by AIPAC and the defense industry. No machine. No PAC. No consultants telling us to play it safe.
  • Three legislative districts endorsed Melissa over the incumbent — including his ownThe 33rd LD (Adam Smith's home district) endorsed Melissa over him. The 43rd LD formally censured Smith and endorsed Melissa — an unprecedented action. The 31st LD rescinded their Smith endorsement and gave it to Melissa.

  • The Stranger's sole endorsement — primary and general, 2024"On policy knowledge, rhetorical prowess, and sheer drive, none hold a candle to Melissa Chaudhry."
Why This Matters

This is why I am running. Not because politics is theater. Because power is structured politically — and the people of this district deserve someone who knows how to use it for them.
